MT Group is reconstructing the Vilnius-Kaunas main gas pipeline – a nearly 15km long DN700 gas pipeline in Kaunas district municipality. The project team has already been set up, pipes were ordered and works on the construction site will commence in February.

The contract for the reconstruction was entrusted to MT Group by Lithuanian gas transmission system operator Amber Grid and is worth EUR 13.2 million.

Along with the main pipeline, MT Group will build a new block valve station with a modern electrochemical corrosion protection system, which will help to ensure the reliable and long-term operation of the gas pipeline. The pipeline, which has been in operation since 1983 connecting Vilnius and Kaunas, two of Lithuania’s largest cities, will, after modernization, ensure uninterrupted, reliable and safe gas supply to the residents of Kaunas and Kaišiadorys districts.

„Last year was very productive for the Lithuanian energy sector, and we are delighted to be starting this year with yet another strategic project for Lithuania. This is the sixth contract we have concluded with Amber Grid, the Lithuanian natural gas transmission system operator, in the last twelve months. The project team is already mobilized, and we are ready to start the works on site in February, aiming to complete the project within the very ambitious timeframe,” says Kristina Norvaišienė, Executive Director of MT Group.

After the reconstruction, the Vilnius-Kaunas main gas pipeline will be modern and equipped with smart technologies, i.e., advanced corrosion rate sensors for monitoring the pipeline condition, a modern specialized data management system SCADA and other innovative solutions.

Previously, MT Group implemented many major energy independence projects affecting the Baltic States. Just before the new year, the company completed the modernization of the Kiemėnai (Lithuania) gas metering station, as well as the construction of a high-pressure offshore pipeline in Paldiski, Estonia, which has been connected to the Estonian LNG terminal. A few years ago, MT Group successfully completed the reconstruction of the Vilnius-Panevezys-Riga main gas pipeline, for which it was awarded a gold medal in the Lithuanian Product of the Year competition of the Lithuanian Confederation of Industrialists (LPK).

MT Group has contributed not only to national and regional but also to pan-European natural gas infrastructure projects of strategic importance. A few months earlier, as part of the Baltic Pipe project, the company completed a 41 km onshore pipeline, connecting a Danish pipeline in the Baltic Sea with the Polish national gas transmission system.

The project’s works starts in February 2023 and are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023.
